History and coffee

Safely back in the room after a long day of dashing arround Dublin.  Although I don't know if dashing is accurate since there was quite a bit of slow ambling and plenty of sitting.

Having successfully managed to stay up till a reasonable time last night, we woke up at 8ish which was both late (for Maggie) and early (for me) so all in all a reasonable compromise.  We decided to do the wander for coffee and pastries with a brief stop along the way to watch a boat on the canal.

We successfully obtained snacks and ate them outside of the archeology museum.

This was to be the first of several coffees for the day.

The archeology museum was a wonder.  We found out quite a bit about Irish history and made up a song about Irish gold to the tune of the 12 days of Christmas. I dare you not to when you see a sign that says " Nine Golden Balls" as we did.

We saw an exhibit about the Battle of Clontarf - on the the defining moments in Irish history a thousand years ago.  There is quite of lot of Clontarf related activity this year to celebrate the aniversary.

After stopping for a bit of lunch, we headed to Dublin castle.  It is not what you would picture in your mind as a castle, except for one tower and some ruins that managed to survive a fire many years ago.  Instead it was built for state functions and still serves as a place for dignitaries to vist.

We had some time after visiting the castle before our evening plans, so we spent time just hanging out.

We also walked along the river Liffey and took some pictures.

Maggie got some good pictures of a swan.  We also found a wooden tag attached to a ladder on the side of the river.  It was part of a story art project called Tag Dublin.  The one we found was about someone who was told that the posts on the ladders looked like snail eyes and now cannot help thinking about snail eyes every time she sees the ladders.

We then went to the Brazen Head, the oldest pub in Dublin, for an evening of food, music, and storytelling. It was fun and the food was excellent, but by the end we were running out of steam.  And so, after a long day we hopped a bus and headed home.
